Why Cultural Orphan, and why now
This space is being launched for a number of reasons, and in no particular order, they are as follows: to share my observations on the changes in the cultural, political, socio-economic landscape with anyone who might feel likewise or hopefully, differently, and can either challenge my view, and/or provide a different perspective; to learn from others; to connect with other writers who can make me a better one because they are committed to good writing; and just connect with other kindred souls.
After meeting some other folks who have substacks of their own (which I like and on which I comment) who have encouraged me to write more, I’m taking the plunge! Most of them I met on another substack from which I have been banned for reasons I don’t fully comprehend (but I believe it has largely to do with repeatedly challenging the author’s irrational, infantile, personal hatred of Donald Trump). Personally, I don’t care if you like or dislike Trump, that’s your business – but if you are going to express a vitriolic hatred of Trump, Biden, Obama, or anyone else, be prepared to provide a reasoned explanation why, if you’re asked to do so, by me or anyone else.
The Cultural Orphan community
Everyone is welcome, as long as the discourse is civil, spirited, and courteous. Apologists and propagandists for the left are welcome, but if being confronted with ideas with which you disagree is unpleasant in any way, this may not be the place for you. Know that no one will be banned because they hold a view for which I don’t care.
My hope is to keep this reasonably elevated and intelligent, so commentary ought to be focused on developments, events, what people say and do, not who they are – so invective toward any public figure is best directed at their policies, decisions and behaviours, and not the individuals.
What to expect from Cultural Orphan
I would love to commit to posting on a regular basis, but I have a day job, and a wife who I love more than life, itself. However, when I do post, I will do my best to make it worth your while, entertaining, and thought-provoking – but if I fail to do any of those things, know that it will always be candid. This is a work in progress, so for now, everyone will be receiving the same content.
Nice opening. I love the statue. May I ask what it is? (Yes, I'm a philistine.)
"and a wife who I love more than life, itself." I knew there was a reason I really liked you.
